South Africa is the world’s largest producer of chrome (14 000 Mtpa), platinum group metals (193 tpa), manganese (4.7 million Mtpa) and vermiculite (210 000 tpa). South Africa is the world’s second largest producer of ilmenite (1.17 Mtpa), rutile (130 000 tpa) and zirconium (370 000 tpa).
About 40% of the world’s total gold reserves are found in the Witwatersrand area. On some parts of this reef, such as TauTona Mine (Western Deep No. 3 Shaft) and Mponeng Gold Mine near Carletonville (the deepest mines in the world), gold mining occurs at depths exceeding 4 km! This reef is estimated to still hold more than 6 000 tons, meaning that even after more than a century of mining, it is still the world’s second largest gold resource.
The Bushveld Igneous Complex, found in the country’s north, produces 80% of the world’s platinum, and approximately 40% of its palladium. Five of the largest platinum-producing mines are located in the Rustenburg area. The North West and Limpopo province’s each have around 35 platinum mining projects currently.
South Africa is the world’s fourth largest producer of diamonds, with production around 8.15 Mct of diamonds annually – 7.79 Mct of which continues to be derived from the kimberlite formations that were discovered in the mid-1800s. Smaller marine mining operations off South Africa’s coast yield approximately 27 302 ct per year.
South’s Africa’s coal fields in Witbank and Ermelo, in Mpumalanga province, and more recently around areas like Waterberg in the Limpopo province, produce around 260 tonnes of coal per annum, making the country the sixth biggest coal producer.
Iron ore is mined in Sishen and Thabazimbi, and more than 80% of South Africa’s output comes from these areas. Iron ore sales were over R4.5 billion to date in 2017.
